The 2014 Commonwealth Games begin

The Commonwealth Games open today in Glasgow, Scotland.
The games are held every four years.
This year, they are held from July 23 to August 3.
It is the first time Scotland has hosted the games.

About 6,500 athletes will complete
in 17 different sports.

by the British Empire.
An empire is a group of countries
ruled by one power, such as a queen.
The British Empire lasted
for 346 years, from 1603 to 1949.

The Commonwealth is a group of 53 countries in six continents.
Canada is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations.
The games unite “the Commonwealth family through sport,”
says the Commonwealth Games Federation.

  • Canada hosted the games in 1930, 1954, 1978 and 1994.
  • The first Commonwealth Games (1930) were held in Hamilton, Canada.
    Hamilton is in the province of  Ontario.
  • In 1994, the games were in Victoria, B.C.
    Canada ranked 2nd; it won 133 medals.
    Australia ranked 1st; it won 184 medals.
