Students come to British Columbia from many countries. They are called international students. They go to schools all over BC.

They like Vancouver. Vancouver is a multicultural city. The city values its environment.

These students spend $2billion every year in BC. This income supports more than 23,400 jobs in BC.

Wijaya says that teaching in Canada is not as authoritarian as in Asia. He says in Canada teaching focuses more on thinking.

Wijaya says it is hard being away from his family. “Sometimes when you’re alone, it’s really stressful and you just crash.”

International students choose Canada because of the reputation of the schools here.

The federal government
The federal government wants more students to come here from other countries. There are 239,000 international students in Canada. They add $7.7 billion to the economy.

Canada wants to attract the world’s best and brightest students.

“They add richness to our classrooms and our culture. They help Canadians have a better idea of what the world is like,” says Ajay Patel, dean of international education at Langara College.
