Toddlers learn by doing. Making “Funny face toasts” is a fun and healthy way to learn. It helps small hand muscles grow stronger and lets children be creative.
It also encourages them to talk and tell stories about the faces they make.
What you need:
- whole wheat bread
- healthy spreads (such as hummus or low-fat cream cheese)
- vegetables such as cucumber slices, grape tomatoes, sliced bell peppers
What you do:
- Toast a slice of whole wheat bread. Put it on a plate.
- Spread a thin layer of hummus or cream cheese on the toast.
- Invite your child to make their own funny faces using the vegetables. For example, cucumber slices for eyes, a grape tomato for a nose, and carrot sticks or bell pepper slices for a mouth or hair.
- You can ask questions such as
– “Where do your eyes go?
– “Can you find a shape for the nose?”
– “How do you make a sad face?” - Enjoy!
