Prevent drowning

Every year, more than 400 people drown in Canada.

Drowning is the second leading cause of accidental death for children.

National Drowning Prevention Week is from July 19 to July 25. The Lifesaving Society of Canada gives tips to promote safety in and around the water.

How to prevent drowning:

  1. Take the Canadian Swim to Survive program. You can learn what to do if you fall into the water.
  2. Wear a lifejacket when you are out on a boat.  Make sure it fits.
  3. Don’t drink alcohol before or when you are swimming or playing water sports.
  4. Always watch children around water. Children can drown in pools and bathtubs.
